بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

What is al-amru bi-l-marufi wa-n-nahyu ‘ani-I-munkari?

Al-amru bi-l-marufi wa-n-nahyu ‘ani-I-munkari, or otherwise known as enjoining good and forbidding evil, is obligatory upon Muslims in Islam.

The proof for this is found within the Holy Qur’an.

“The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” [9:71]

Islam came to abrogate what came before it. Allah سبحانه و تعالى‎ says in the Qur’an.

“We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the scripture and as a criterion over it.” [5:48]

We can understand how to implement this by referring to the Sunnah of our beloved Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ witnessed something unfold and didn’t react to it, it was because he saw it as something good or at the least something not in need of condemnation.

In other words, silence towards a matter was taken as an implicit sign of satisfaction.

We can apply this concept to the tragic events we see unfold throughout the Muslim world such as in Gaza or East Turkestan. If we as Muslims do not speak up against the crimes committed against our brothers and sisters in these parts of the world, it is as if we have shown our satisfaction towards them.

Tariq ibn Shihab reported: A man asked the Prophet ﷺ while he had his leg in the stirrup, “Which jihad is best?” The Prophet said, “A word of truth before a tyrannical ruler.” [Sunan al-Nasa’i 4209]

As your brother in Islam, I implore you to not forsake your obligation as a Muslim to enjoin in good and forbid evil, as well as not miss out on the fruits of Jihad in the path of Allah سبحانه و تعالى.‎
