بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Sayyidina Anas bin al-Nadr was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He belonged to the Ansar, the early residents of Medina who welcome and supported the Prophet ﷺ and the Muhajirun when they made the hijrah.

Allah says about the Muhajirun and the Ansar in the Qur’an,

“Those who believed, emigrated, and strived with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah, as well as those who gave them shelter and help—they are truly guardians of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you have no obligations to them until they emigrate. But if they seek your help ˹against persecution˺ in faith, it is your obligation to help them, except against people bound with you in a treaty. Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.” [8:72]

Anas bin Malik said: “My paternal uncle Anas bin al-Nadr – after whom I was named – did not participate in the battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

This distressed him and he said: “I was absent from the first battle which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ attended. By Allah! If Allah gives me the opportunity to participate in another battle along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then Allah will see what I will do!”

He did not want to say more than that. A year later, Anas bin al-Nadr attended the battle of Uhud, where he met Sa’d bin Mu’adh and said (to him]: “O Abu ‘Amr where are you going?). I long for the fragrance of Paradise and I have found it near the mountains of Uhud.” He fought them until he was killed. They found more than 80 wounds on his body, be they from blows of a sword, puncture wounds, or arrows.

My paternal aunt al-Rubayy’ bint al-Nadr said: “I could not recognize my brother except by his fingertips.”

It was then this this verse was revealed:

”Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah; of them some have fulfilled their vow, and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed in the least.”
